Before 1949 the Royal Hong Kong Police had no female police officers. That changed when Ms. Kimmy Koh was appointed as the Force’s first ever Sub-Inspector.

 

Back in the 1970s female officers main duties included directing traffic, patrolling, crowd management and criminal investigation.

 

The summer uniform, shown in our figure, is typical of period and reflects the fact that policewomen at the time were unarmed.

Before 1949 the Royal Hong Kong Police had no female police officers. That changed when Ms. Kimmy Koh was appointed as the Force’s first ever Sub-Inspector.

 

By the 1950s that began to rapidly change as more and more women joined and took part in a wide range of duties within the Force.

 

Today, more than 3,000 women officers are active in every branch of the Police service.

This changed in 1995 when female officers began to be trained to carry firearms.
