In days of long ago there were hundreds of small, independently owned farms all over Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories. Most of the fruit and vegetables consumed in the Colony were grown on these farms and transported on foot by ‘Coolies’ such as this man directly to local markets. Work could be back-breaking and long (at least 12 hours-a-day) but at least it kept you fed!
