THE WAR OF 1812

The Battle of Chippawa, 5th July 1814

During this period one of the main changes was in loading and firing techniques. The French drill replaced the English routine. Most notably shifting the cannoneer who held the portfire and actually touched off the piece from the left to the right side of the breech.

This meant that he had to stand with his back to the muzzle in order to keep his right hand with the portfire towards the gun.
