The 42nd was the most numerous regiment in Abercromby’s army numbering approximately 1,100 all ranks. Their attack on the French right was defended by three French regiments, La Reine, Bearne, and Guyenne. The highlanders suffered great losses, Lt. William Grant was to write “ Even those that were mortally wounded, cried aloud to their companions, not to mind or lose a thought for them, but to follow their officers, and charge the enemy, and to mind the honour of their King and country.”
