ADC First Lt. WILLIAM JENKINS-WORTH

An aide-de-camp (French for camp assistant) is a personal assistant, secretary, or adjutant to a person of high rank, usually a senior military officer or a head of state. The first aide-de-camp is typically the foremost personal aide, and was expected to take on any odd job his general might want done. He was an extension of the general’s eyes, ears and voice. He carried orders to subordinate units and observed their execution.

The Aide to Brigadier General Winfield Scott, the commanding officer of the First Brigade, Left Division of the US Army on 5th July 1814, was First Lt. William Jenkins- Worth.

During the War of 1812 ADC’s were normally selected from among the regimental officers, and only lieutenants were supposed to be detailed for this duty.
