Hello and welcome to the November edition of Toy Soldiers’ Club News. November will be a great month for WWII and French and Indian War enthusiasts; enjoy! … and be sure to pin point the sets you like and let your family know about them… Christmas is coming, and they’ll need to know what your battle plan is to be able to supply you with the appropriate reinforcements.

UPCOMING ATTRACTIONS IN NOVEMBER 07!

BBG009 “Raupen Schlepper”

The first of two tracked vehicles specially designed to accompany the “winter” German troops released in mid October. This great little transport vehicle is a “real beaut” and comes in an authentic “war-weary” snow camouflage… The rear canvas canopy is removable… The driver’s cab interior is fully detailed… complete with driver… A little ammunition trailer attaches to the rear of the vehicle and… there’s an additional snow-camouflaged pointing NCO to complete the set. Great set… outstanding value! (Availability: Mid-November)

“OPERATION MARKET GARDEN”

At last, the much-anticipated new British Paras are about to “descend from the heavens” and land into the hell that was the little Dutch town called… ARNHEM… in September 1944. Immortalized in the book and then the movie, “A Bridge Too Far”, K&C proudly and defiantly returns and improves on their first big World War Two Success — “ARNHEM’44”. That series was the very first major toy soldier range to introduce, what has now become, the “industry standard” — the Matt-painted toy soldier accompanied by a wide variety of scale model fighting vehicles.

It’s sometimes forgotten that, before K&C developed these matt figures, 99% of toy soldiers (from all companies) were high gloss finish. K&C literally “broke the mold” and started a mini revolution in producing and collecting which continues to this day. Scale wise the original ARNHEM series was the first to be 1:30 scale. Again, a major development that has been rapidly gaining ground on the more traditional 1:32 scale. Anyway, enough of the history… let’s get down to the basics...

Special Note: A second batch of British 1st Airborne Paras and glider troops will be “dropped-in” along with other new releases in December! Look out for another great “ARNHEM” jeep set MG002 (complete with trailer)… a 6 pounder anti tank gun plus 3 man crew… a 2-man PIAT team and… four fighting single Paras. Even more reinforcements are planned for 2008

A BRIDGE TOO FAR

‘In a sleepy little town with its brick church towers and arching iron bridges, allied paratroopers drop in deadly waves … It is 1977 but it is World War II. It is the tragic Allied attack on the Rhine bridge at Arnhem. Perhaps the biggest motion pictures of all time, it is called ‘A BRIDGE TOO FAR’.

THE BATTLE ON SNOWSHOES 14th March 1758

November is the start of the “Battle on Snowshoes” series. This month there will be 4 sets of French and Indians, and December will see the first of the British “Snowshoes” sets. John Jenkins hopes to release 1 new set for this series every month throughout 2008, with the final set including the French leader Langy, and Robert Rogers of the Rangers.

The long winter months of the French and Indian War in North America meant that the large regular armies were inactive. The early years of the war, the French had dominated the summer campaigns as well as the winter months. The French soldier and their Indian allies had long been used to fighting during the long winter periods. The small French patrols and raids went unchallenged, for the first few years of the war. It was not until the British army introduced a special company of Rangers under the command of Robert Rogers that the French had any serious opposition. The men on the British side were primarily native born settlers from New England, and on the French side native born Canadians and their native Indian allies of New France were led by the French partisan Langy.

The Battle on Snowshoes took place in the wilderness of North America on March 14th 1758 during one of these patrols where Rogers had planned an ambush. A small group of Indians had found the tracks of Rogers’ men in the snow, and had raised the alarm at a nearby French fort. Although the Indians and French initially walked into an ambush by the Rangers, it was not long before the superior numbers of the French began to gain the upper hand. It was to be a clear cut victory for the French and Indians and resulted in the almost total annihilation of the best of the newly formed English Rangers. Only darkness was to save Rogers and the remnants of his force. The Rangers suffered heavy casualties and Rogers is alleged to have only managed to escape by leaping from a cliff! This battle has become known as “The Battle on Snowshoes”.
